Converting a LAN Test from ExamView 4 or Earlier

Kevin Herrholtz -

The ExamView Assessment Suite offers significant enhancements over previous versions of ExamView Test Generator (version 4 and earlier) regarding online (LAN-based) tests. Because of these improvements, the procedures for administering online tests, taking online tests, and viewing your results have changed.

OpenUpdating LAN Test from an Older Version

In previous versions of ExamView, student results were stored in the test (TST) file. If you made a change to the test file, all student results were cleared. Now, results are stored in the online test (EOT) file. Changes can be made to the test file without affecting the online results. Also, you were limited to certain question types when creating online tests. Now, all question types can be used in online tests.

  1. When you open your test in ExamView Test Generator, a message appears stating that your test contains online data. Click OK and leave ExamView Test Generator open.
  2. Open ExamView Test Manager.
  3. If you have already created a class, select Open an existing class and open your class. If you have not created a class, select Start a new class and enter your class information.
  4. Click File from the menu bar and select Import Class Roster from LAN Test Ver 4 or Earlier.
  5. Navigate to the folder that contains your test file and select the file.

The students from your online roster are imported into your class. If you already had students in your class, duplicate student IDs are ignored.

  6. Leave ExamView Test Manager open and return to the ExamView Test Generator.
  7. Click File from the menu bar, mouse over Publish To and select ExamView Test Player on LAN.
  8. Select Limit access to students in a particular class and click Next.
  9. Click Save. Enter a filename and save your file in a location where your students have read and write access.
  10. Return to the ExamView Test Manager.
  11. Click Create New Assignment from the toolbar or click Assignment form the menu bar and select Create New Assignment.
  12. Enter the assignment name.
  13. Optionally, enter an assignment ID for the assignment.
  14. Select the assignment category, term, and date.
  15. Select Online test delivered over a local area network (LAN) and click Next.
  16. Select the test file (with a EOT extension) that you created in step 11 above. This allows ExamView Test Manager to read in the answer key, point values, etc. If necessary, navigate to the appropriate folder to access the test file.
    NOTE

You can click Preview Test to make sure that you are selecting the correct test.

  17. You can allow your students to complete the test multiple times or over multiple sessions. Select the appropriate option(s) and click Next.

If you allow students to complete an online test over multiple sessions, the program will save their work and let them continue where they left off in another session.

  18. Enter a password for the test. You can choose to use this password for all students or only for those who were not assigned a password when they were created.
  19. Specify when students can take the test. You may allow students to take the test at any time, or specify dates and times when the test is accessible.

You may also set a date when students can go back and review their test results. If you choose to use this option, you cannot use the Students may access this test anytime option and the date must be after the end date for students to access the test.

  20. Click Next.
  21. Optionally, set a time limit for a test. You can also choose whether or not students can pause the timer. While a test is paused, questions do not appear on the screen.
  22. Select the question presentation order. You can scramble the questions for each student, or display questions in the same order for each student.

You may also choose to require students to answer questions in order. If you choose this option, students cannot move on to the next question until they answer the current one. Students can not go back and change their answers if this option is selected.

  23. Select whether or not students can check their answers. You can also set how many times students can check their answer on a given question and whether feedback information (if available) is displayed for incorrect responses.
  24. Select the information available to students after they complete a test and click Next.

Depending on your testing objectives, you may want to allow your students to view a detailed report for either all responses or just incorrect responses. In this report, you may display the questions, student responses, item-by-item scoring, correct answers, rationale, and reference information. Or, you could choose to let students view only their score (percentage). You may also choose whether students are allowed to print this report.

  25. Review the summary information and click Back if you need to make any changes. Click Finish when all of the options are set as desired.
  26. Your students can now take the test using the ExamView Test Player.
    IMPORTANT

Be sure to update your ExamView Test Player to the latest version. Online tests created with ExamView Test Manager are not compatible with version 4 or earlier of the ExamView Test Player.

  27. When your students have completed the test, click Assignment from the menu bar and select Get Results from LAN Test to import results.

OpenImporting Results from an Old LAN Test (Version 4 or Earlier)

To allow students to continue taking this test with the newer version of the ExamView Test Player, you must publish your test as an online test.
